Abstract: When certain Egyptian monarchs, like Nefertiti, Nefertari, and the mask of Tutankhamun, had cosmetics, the first archaeological evidence of their use was discovered in Egypt circa 3500 BC. Cosmetics were also used by the ancient Greeks and Romans. The Romans and Ancient Egyptians used vanities containing lethal mercury and frequently lead. Several women continued to use cosmetics in the middle ages, even if ecclesiastical authorities disapproved of their use. To attain a lighter colour during the Middle Ages, women would apply pastes made of lead, chalk, or flour or would undergo bloodletting. Women would also apply a white lead pigment known as "ceruse" on their faces to give them the appearance of having pale skin. Making a marketing decision requires both opinion and factual knowledge.
