Abstract: Distributed generation, also known as DG, is a small-scale generation unit directly coupled to a distributed system. There is great interest in installing distributed generation near consumer load centers. DG technology consists of conventional and non-conventional energy sources to generate electricity to meet the ever-increasing needs of energy demand. Optimal location and size of DG units can improve the performance of active power system networks. Integrating an optimally sized DG unit at an ideal location improves the system voltage profile and minimizes system active and reactive losses. In this paper, advanced techniques for optimal placement and sizing of DG are proposed. This white paper provides an overview of the various methods implemented to determine the optimal location and capacity of DG units in order to maximize their benefits in the system grid.
