Abstract: PCCI-DI diesel combustion is one of the advanced combustion types resulting a decrease in NOx–soot trade-offs than the conventional diesel combustion approach. In most research works this technique of emission reduction was conducted with insignificant effect on the performance characteristics of the engine. In this study the performance characteristics of a diesel engine operated in both PCCI-DI and conventional/baseline modes were investigated. Mainly performance parameters and their corresponding relations of exhaust gas temperature vs engine speed, specific fuel consumption vs engine power output and engine load were compared and evaluated. Single cylinder, four stroke and air cooleddiesel engine was used for the experiment. Methanol port injection, optimized advanced injection timing, EGR setting and dieseline direct injection were used for the experimental setup. In optimizing the operation of the PCCI-DI diesel engine setup, algorithm of grey relational analysis together with Taguchi method was used. From the investigation emission reductions were attained through insignificant reduction of engine power. Increasing the speed of the engine resulted in an increase in temperature of the exhaust gas for both PCCI- DI and conventional operation conditions. Lower specific fuel consumption and lower exhaust gas temperature were also obtained in the PCCI-DI operation than the conventional.
