Abstract

Abstract: Many hosts send a stream of packets cause congestion and disrupt legitimate traffic, rendering the Internet exposed to bandwidth distributed denial-of-service (BW-DDoS) operations. Until now, BW-DDoS operations have relied on brute-force methods that are crude and inefficient. Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks involving a large number of compromised machines have a negative impact on the legitimacy of services provided to end users. Future strikes could be far more effective and dangerous. More sophisticated defenses are required to meet the expanding risk. Bandwidth DDoS (BW-DDoS) attacks induce congestion in network infrastructure by raising total traffic (in bytes) or total packets (generally a lower limit, utilizing short packets such as TCP SYN or ACK carrying no message).
